CORB LUND

Sunday 22nd February 2009

Dinner/Show $60
Show Only Presale $30

They call his music scruffy country, ulterior country, dissident country, subversive country, insubordinate country, non-toxic country or western music with some hair on it.

Corb Lund was born and raised in rural southern Alberta and comes from four generations of Canadian ranchers and cowboys. He writes and sings his own songs. He grew up riding horseback, chasing cattle and rodeoing on the prairies and in the foothills of the Rockies the first half of his life. Then hespent 10 years driving across Canada, the States, Australia and Europe in an old van with his indie rock band called "the smalls", playing every funky dive along the way. His writing reflects the unholy marriage of these experiences.

Roots artist of the year 2008: Corb Lund was honoured with the CMMA Roots Artist of The Year for the fifth straight year.

On his fifth album, Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!, Corb Lund writes about warfare via something he knows about first hand: horses. It's been almost a century since most of us pondered the cavalrys integral role in military history. But as Lund points out on the globetrotting title track, you can still find traces of the cavalry in more contemporary conflicts, like the one going on today in Afghanistan.

Not only does he write the kind of timeless melodies that sound like they've been handed down by oral tradition, he boasts a kick-butt, bare-bones backing band he calls The Hurtin' Albertans.

Ultimately, Lunds lyrics are what set him apart from every singer/songwriter trying to reinvent the wagon wheel. With a firm grasp og history, a colourful vocabulary and an aversion to typical love songs, Lund is a storyteller, first and foremost. That makes him part of a dying breed.

"For sheer musical adventure, few compare with Manx" (Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald.)

"I've discovered something new tonight, seeing Harry play" (Bruce Springsteen, 2005.)

 JOHN CLEARY

&

THE ABSOLUTE MONSTER GENTLEMEN

15th MARCH 2008

Dinner/Show $62
Show Only Presale $32

"Jon Cleary is the ninth wonder in the world."
-  Bonnie Raitt

"Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own, but Cleary's full combo R&B is as broad, deep and roiling as the Mississippi river, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary's vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-Meters roll of his Gentlemen."
- David Fricke "Pin Your Spin" Review Rolling Stone - April 21, 2004

I haven't heard anybody close to having absorbed so much funk and so many subtleties of the different genius piano players and guitar players and rhythms of New Orleans
- Jazziz Magazine 2002

Cleary plays piano as if he's revving up an engine and sings as if a line drawing of his behatted self were next to "soul" in Webster's.
- The Washington Post June 15, 2005 -- Pamela Murray Winters

BOBBY FLYNN  & The OMEGA 3

 MARCH 9th 2008
Dinner/Show $52
Show Only Presale $22 On the door $25

He's a pop explorer, a sonic adventurer, mining emotion, confounding critics, and delivering a thrilling collection of genre-busting songs.

He's not a pop commodity and that's a very rare and precious thing nowadays. He's an artist. "It's his voice, which brings to mind the otherworldly tenderness of Nick Drake and baritone flashes of early 70s David Bowie," wrote Mark Mordue in The Sydney Morning Herald. "The idealism, almost, of another time we may have felt we lost."

Welcome to Bobby Flynn's debut album, 'Out Front'. Bobby says it's a record "drenched in energy from the road". Bobby Flynn & The Omega 3 did 52 shows this year before going off the road on August 14. The following day, they set up their gear at a shack in Byron Bay, and on August 16 they started recording their debut album. "They're just beginning to open the doors in their minds...It's like a boulder rolling down a hill you can watch it and talk about it and scream and say, "Sh**!", but you can't stop it. It's just a question of where it's going to go" Tom Wolfe, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Bobby took the album title from Tom Wolfe's 60s psychedelic classic, 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test'. "When you're on the road, living with people closely and creating together, every moment has to be as out front as possible," Bobby explains. "It's important in any creative relationship. The clearer you can be with communication, the better the result will be."
